Wind ratings and what Nebraska code actually requires

Short answer

The basic design wind speed for the Omaha metro is 115 mph as a three second gust for a house. That is the map value, and it is not the number printed on a garage door. Doors are rated in pounds per square foot of design pressure, because pressure is what the door resists and pressure depends on more than wind speed. Go look at the label on your own door. If there is no label, you do not know what you have.

Where the 115 mph number comes from

Design wind speeds are set by ASCE 7 and adopted through the building code. Eastern Nebraska falls in the 115 mph contour for ordinary residential structures.

Two things people get wrong. It is a three second gust, not a sustained wind, so an older document quoting 90 mph is describing the same wind with different math. And it is a design value, not a forecast. It does not mean Omaha sees 115 mph winds.

Confirm the current adopted figure with the City of Omaha for your specific address if you are pulling a permit. Jurisdictions amend, and the number that matters is the one your inspector uses.

Why doors are rated in psf and not mph

A wind speed is not a load. A pressure is a load.

Converting one to the other requires squaring the wind speed and applying a topographic factor, an exposure factor, a directionality factor, a gust effect factor and external pressure coefficients that depend on the size of the component and where it sits in the wall. DASMA Technical Data Sheet 194 lists eight variables including mean roof height, nearby terrain, component size and door location.

The consequence is that two houses at the same intersection can require different design pressures. A manufacturer cannot honestly print an mph rating on a door. A door labeled "rated for 130 mph" with no pressure value is telling you nothing you can check.

Exposure B versus Exposure C

Exposure B is urban and suburban terrain with closely spaced obstructions the size of houses. Most established Omaha subdivisions with mature trees are Exposure B.

Exposure C is open terrain with scattered obstructions generally under 30 feet. New construction on the western edge of the metro is frequently Exposure C until the neighborhood fills in.

The pressures are not close

Using DASMA Technical Data Sheet 155v, a 16 by 7 double door at 15 foot mean roof height and 115 mph lands near 11 psf in Exposure B and near 16 to 18 psf in Exposure C. That is roughly 50 percent higher. The trap is a homeowner in a new subdivision on open ground being told "everyone here uses the standard door" by someone pricing off an Exposure B assumption. If your house backs onto open field, ask the question directly.

Note also that positive and negative pressures are not always equal. Positive is wind pushing inward. Negative is suction pulling outward, and on many doors the suction number is larger. Suction is what pops a door out of its tracks.

The label the code requires

The 2021 IRC section R609.4.1 requires a permanent, manufacturer-applied label showing all six of the following:

  1. The garage door manufacturer
  2. The model or series number
  3. The positive design wind pressure
  4. The negative design wind pressure
  5. The installation instruction drawing reference number
  6. The applicable test standard

A label with a manufacturer name and a model number and nothing else does not satisfy the section.

The installation drawing reference matters more than it looks. A door is only rated as installed per that drawing, which specifies the jamb fastening pattern, track fasteners, and the number and placement of struts. A correctly rated door installed with the wrong anchors into the wrong substrate is not a rated assembly.

ANSI/DASMA 108 and ASTM E330

ASTM E330 is the general method for structural performance under uniform static air pressure difference. It describes how to apply the load.

ANSI/DASMA 108 is the door-specific standard, and critically it supplies the pass and fail criteria: deflection limits, permanent set limits, and what counts as failure. Both positive and negative pressure are tested.

CE marks mean nothing here

A CE mark is a manufacturer's self-declaration of conformity with European Union directives. It is not a US building code approval, it is not evidence of ASTM E330 or ANSI/DASMA 108 testing, and it carries no weight with an Omaha inspector.

The same applies to "wind rated", "storm ready" or "hurricane grade" with no pressure values attached. If it does not have a psf number and a test standard, it is a slogan.

Go look at your own door

Take five minutes. Open the garage and check the inside face of the door, the end stiles at either side, and along the bottom section. Photograph the label and read it against the six items above.

Complete label: you know your design pressures. Keep the photo. In a wind damage claim, that label is your documentation.

Manufacturer and model only: the door may still be rated and you can often look up the model, but you cannot demonstrate compliance from the door itself.

Nothing: the door predates the labeling requirement or was never rated. Very common on Omaha homes built before the mid 2000s. It does not mean the door is unsafe. It means it has no established wind pressure rating.
